Christchurch in Mourning

3/21/2019

A group of students went into Christchurch to their pay respects to the people who died at the Deans Ave and Linwood mosques. We took our banner, that our school had made, to the memorial at the Botanic Gardens and attached it to the fence, along with the hundreds of other messages of love and support.  It was heartbreaking to see all the flowers but to see everyone come together to pay their respects showed us how New Zealanders support each other. Words by Zahra Pengelly, Year 12

The level three Chemistry class carrying out their investigation into ascorbic acid (Vitamin C) content in fruit juices. The practical produced some excellent results that the pupils used to complete the internal assessment towards their NZQA Chemistry qualification. This year the students choose to focus on the effects that temperature has on ascorbic acid and what their findings mean for levels of ascorbic acid in fruits, vegetables and fruit drinks.

Monarch Musings

In Kakariki Class we have been watching over 60 Monarch caterpillars turn into chrysalis and then hatch out as butterflies. The caterpillars have crawled all over the classroom to form their chrysalis. We have loved watching them.
Here is some writing pretending to be caterpillars or butterflies.

I am a stripy butterfly. I am beautiful. I see flowers. I feel happy. I feel the wind. I smell the flowers. I love being a butterfly. I want to lay eggs. Tina

I am a skinny caterpillar. I see other caterpillars that I want to be friends with. I feel the leaves rustling on my feet. Mason

I smell stinky smoke. I am a pirate monarch butterfly. I feel happy. I wonder if bird will eat me. Nico

I am a yellow and black caterpillar. I am fat. I live in a tractor with the wheels until I turn into a chrysalis. Jens

Spoon Challenges, Year 13s vs Teachers Challenges

3/14/2019

Mid Term One and we are two challenges into the Year 13 vs Teachers 'spoon' challenges. The first of the tasks was a race during our Year 8 to 13 swimming sports. Unfortunately, this was a loss to the students.
As the bearers of the Spoon, the Year 13 team choose the next challenge.
In March the students selected a Dodgeball tournament, best out of three. However, yet again there were upset faces from the students as they again lost 2 games to none.

The teachers eagerly await the next challenge.

On Wednesday 13th March our bowling brothers headed in to the city for the Canterbury Secondary Schools Bowls Championships. In 2018 they were both successful and this year continued in similar form. Up against 11 other players from the Canterbury region they both achieved well in pool play which lead to Jordan making the final and Logan playing off for 3rd. Congratulations to them both Jordan coming 1st (on right) and Logan 3rd for 2019. Thanks to Val and Jason for their efforts throughout the season.

On Wednesday 13th March we took a strong team of 31 students in to the new international Athletics track at Nga Puna Wai for the annual CCHS Athletics competition.
Our students did really well with a handful of 1st places and a number of 2nd and 3rds. They demonstrated great skills and were well behaved at the event giving a positive image of our school.
A big thanks to all the parents who helped with transport, timing, and getting the students to their events.
Following the event we have 3 students heading into the Canterbury Secondary Schools event next week. Good luck to Ella Ferguson, Josh Gunn, and Jacob Paton.
