Discovery 0-3

Picture
The children in this learning community are energetic, enthusiastic, curious and inquisitive. They are becoming more independent and more self-confident. These children are imaginative and creative, easily motivated and eager to try something new. Perceptions generally dominate judgements and they are beginning to tell the difference between reality and fantasy. They are concrete thinkers. These children learn best if they are physically active. They learn by manipulation of objects and materials, and experiences through play. They are at the beginning of their learning journey and are keen to experience new opportunities. The children learn from each other and work best in small groups.

Learning in this community is active and stimulated by various practical activities that encourages conversations, physical activity and develops knowledge of who they are as well as the beginnings of the basic foundation skills in literacy and numeracy. The learners are given the time and opportunity to master and practise particular skills and are given the opportunity to work individually, in pairs and small groups. Discovery is encouraged, with opportunities to pursue own interests or provocations set up by the teachers, and there is a focus on the process rather than the product. A safe, caring and nurturing environment where co-operation and teamwork opportunities is provided, and teachers give positive encouragement and assistance with learning activities in which success is ensured and experienced.
