English

Ko te ahurei o te tamaiti arahia o tatou mahi.

Let the uniqueness of the child guide our work.

English at Hurunui College is about building the skills in written, visual and oral language which people need in everyday life. As they progress through the school students steadily grow their skills with increasing sophistication across the six areas outlined in the curriculum:
  • reading and writing
  • speaking and listening
  • viewing and presenting.
These literacy skills are essential for good communication with others, active participation in learning, critical thinking and problem solving.

Programmes at Hurunui College encourage students to both interpret what others have shared (making meaning) and sharing their own ideas and opinions (creating meaning). We cater for both students who wish to pursue academic careers by studying NCEA English up to level 3 and those who need to acquire the literacy necessary for success in other subjects and careers.
Many opportunities are available at all levels for individual and group expression in creative and competitive activities. Our Speech Contest is a highlight on the school calendar.
