Exploring Year 4-8

Picture
The children in this learning community are becoming logical thinkers and are capable of concrete problem solving. They have an accumulation in general knowledge and have developed an ability to apply learned concepts to new tasks. They have a real interest in learning life skills such as cooking and fixing things. These children are keen to gain social approval and will live up to the expectations of others. Peer pressure can be strong, friendships are important and they begin to see others point of view. The children have a need to develop a sense of mastery and accomplishment and have a frequent interest in making plans and achieving goals. They have a tendency to be disorganised and forgetful. These children are continually active, enjoy cooperation and like to work in groups. Their interests change rapidly and they usually do their best work in small pieces. They are curious and interested in learning new information and like to be recognised and praised for doing good work. These children have limited decision making ability.

Learning in this community is active and group learning experiences are emphasised, but opportunity for independence is also given in a positive and productive learning environment. There is a focus on learning how to learn. The learners are given the opportunities to engage in activities that encourage the sharing of many viewpoints. A wide variety of learning experiences are provided, including learning activities that build on the basic skills of literacy and numeracy, learning of basic life skills such as cooking, and also opportunity for learners to find the answers to their own questions through a mixture of discovery and inquiry projects. Goal setting is used to assist the learners in improving their ability to manage their own learning. The learning activities give the opportunity for success and their accomplishments are recognised.
