Learning Assistant/Teacher Aide

We are seeking a learning assistant/teacher aide to work alongside a visually impaired 16 year old year 12 female student at Hurunui College. The position will be 20 hrs a week with possible additional hours to support the initial transition. 
 
The ideal applicant will be able to relate well to a teenager, have excellent communication skills and can be patient, compassionate and empathetic. Experience with working with visually impaired people would be an advantage but not essential. All training and support will be provided. 

Job specifications....
  • An understanding of the use of technology to support learning and communication
  • Experience with email and google docs
  • The ability to problem solve alongside a range of different devices and applications will be essential
  • A willingness to learn braille
  • An ability to support and implement a physical activity programme
  • Ability to act as a reader-writer
  • Strong literacy and numeracy skills
  • Able to work as an integral part of a team and can act on advice and feedback

This is an exciting and rewarding opportunity to support a visually impaired student on her journey to independence.

Learning Assistant/Teacher Aide
​

We are seeking a learning assistant/teacher aide who is available to work from 8.45 am - 2.10 pm on Tuesdays for 4.5 hours, starting asap. This position is to support 2-3 students with learning difficulties who are in the Years 10-12 area of the school. 

The ideal applicant would have to be able to relate well to teenagers, work independently, be fit, patient, compassionate, positive, enthusiastic and with experience in working with students on the autism spectrum.

School Guidance Counsellor

​We are seeking a capable and experienced individual to fill the position of school guidance counsellor at Hurunui College. The person would have a qualification in counselling and experience in working with youth and young people. 

The position would be based around one day a week, however, there would be some flexibility around the hours and how the hours are distributed within the week.
 

We welcome applications from both teachers and professional counsellors. 

Key Tasks…
  1. Provide professional individual or group guidance, support and counselling to students, whanau and the school community
  2. Liaise and ensure that appropriate communication is maintained with the Principal, Guidance Team and Leadership Team
  3. Maintain liaison and referral (where appropriate) to district agencies eg. OT, SES, YDA, Health agencies, etc
  4. Where appropriate liaise with whanau
  5. When appropriate share relevant information  with other staff members
  6. When appropriate support and advise teaching staff in regard to specific guidance issues
  7. Arrange and facilitate one-off guidance programmes where deemed appropriate eg. anger management, etc
  8. Write confidential reports as required
  9. Keep and maintain comprehensive records
  10. Engage closely with the school’s Child Protection Policy
  11. Attend and participate in professional development programmes, meetings, and in-service days
  12. Participate in professional supervision and peer review when appropriate and available 
  13. Keep up to date with research and developments within guidance counselling
