The children in this learning community are energetic, enthusiastic, curious and inquisitive. They are becoming more independent and more self-confident, with independence becoming more apparent as they complete their third year of schooling. These children are imaginative and creative, easily motivated and eager to try something new. Perceptions generally dominate judgements and they are beginning to tell the difference between reality and fantasy. They are concrete thinkers. These children learn best if they are physically active. They learn by manipulation of objects and materials, and experiences through play. As these children move into Year 3, their fine motor skills are developed and they are able to tackle more complicated tasks. They are at the beginning of their learning journey and are keen to experience new opportunities. Their ability to take risks and cope with challenges increases as they grow older and they begin to make connections with what they know or have learnt before. As they grow older they are able to manage their feelings and social situations with greater independence. The children learn from each other and work best in small groups.
Learning in this community is active and stimulated by various practical activities that encourage conversations, social interactions, physical activity and develops knowledge of who they are as well as the beginnings of the basic foundation skills in literacy, numeracy and key competencies. As these children move into Year 3, opportunities to take on responsibilities and leadership roles are encouraged, and learning experiences which encourage them to consider more about their world rather than themselves, are provided. The learners are given the time and opportunity to master and practise particular skills and are given the opportunity to work individually, in pairs and small groups. Discovery is encouraged, with opportunities to pursue own interests or provocations set up by the teachers, and there is a focus on the process rather than the product. A safe, caring and nurturing environment where cooperation and teamwork opportunities are provided, and teachers give positive encouragement and assistance with learning activities in which success is ensured and experienced.
