The children in this learning community are beginning to combine logical and abstract thinking. They are becoming more independent with their own personality and interests and have more ability for complex thought and think in broader terms. They begin to see how things are connected to each other. They are ready for more in-depth and longer learning experiences and can take responsibility in planning and evaluating their own work. These children are beginning to think what they might do when they grow up but are often unclear of needs and values. They are keen to step outside their own community to explore. These children have a stronger sense of right and wrong. They are self-focussed and have concerns about their body image. There is an increased focus on friendships and they are influenced by their peer group. They experience emotions that are on a roller coaster ride and the change in hormones and changes in thinking contributes to their mood swings.
Learning in this community is active and engaging and provides opportunity for self-management and responsibility through authentic contexts. Learners are given opportunities to design, plan and carry out inquiries based on real world issues. Learning experiences help to develop life skills related to career choices. Learning experiences provide opportunity for social interactions to help these learners to learn about themselves and how to get along with their peers and with adults. Learning activities provided consolidate the basic skills of literacy and numeracy.
